July 15, 2024 : Experiential learning activities for Grade 1 and 2 provided students with a hands-on approach to understanding the importance of food and community helpers. The learning experience was divided into two main activities: Exploring Fruits, Vegetables, and Various Food Items, and Understanding the Role and Importance of Community Helpers.
Students brought different fruits, vegetables, and food items from home to encourage participation and collaboration while providing a diverse range of food items for exploration. They researched and presented the health benefits and nutritional content of their food items, learned about different kinds of food, and explored the environmental impact of producing and consuming different foods.
To emphasize the importance of community helpers, students were introduced to various community helpers such as firefighters, police officers, doctors, teachers, and farmers, explaining their roles and responsibilities and highlighting how these helpers contribute to society's well-being and functioning. Through role-playing, students discussed the daily tasks of these community helpers and how they help the community.
As a result, students gained a deeper understanding of nutrition, food preparation, and the cultural significance of various foods while developing skills in research, presentation, and critical thinking.
They also learnt about the vital roles community helpers play and developed a sense of gratitude and respect for their contributions, fostering a sense of community and the importance of supporting one another.
These experiential learning activities successfully engaged students in practical and meaningful exploration, providing valuable insights and skills that will enhance their understanding of nutrition, cultural diversity, and community service.
